Sam Parkes to preach on ‘Day 1’
Senior pastor of Mary Esther United Methodist Church in Mary Esther, Fla.
The Rev. Dr. Sam Parkes is the featured preacher Sept. 5 on “Day 1” with host Peter Wallace, the nationally broadcast ecumenical radio program also accessible as a podcast and online at Day1.org.
Parkes is senior pastor of Mary Esther United Methodist Church in Mary Esther, Fla. Before coming to Mary Esther, he served at United Methodist churches in Alabama.
“When You Are Hungry Enough, You Will Cross a Line,” Parkes’ sermon for Sept. 5, is based on Mark 7:24-30, the story of Jesus’ response to the Syrophoenician woman who seeks healing for her demon-possessed daughter. “I ask you, which character here seems to be standing in for God’s designs and desires? Well, it has to be Jesus, right?” he says. “Having said this, though, to my thinking she is the one whose hunger for her child merges with God’s hunger for all God’s children.”
A graduate of Sewanee: The University of the South with a degree in voice performance, Parkes earned his M.Div. from Emory University’s Candler School of Theology in Atlanta and a Th. D. from Emmanuel College in the University of Toronto. He is the developer of a small-group coaching model for pastors called Partners in Preaching. He is currently director of worship for the Southeastern Jurisdictional Conference of the UMC.
The programs include interviews with Parkes conducted by Wallace, who is also executive producer.
“Day 1” has been broadcast every week for 76 years, formerly as “The Protestant Hour.” Featuring outstanding preachers from the mainline denominations, “Day 1” is currently distributed to more than 200 radio stations across America and overseas. The “Day1 Weekly Program” is available through podcast apps. The program is produced by the Alliance for Christian Media, based in Atlanta, Ga. Especially for youth ministers and leaders: The Regional Council of Churches is partnering with the Georgia Dept. of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities in SHARE HOPE. Suicide is a leading cause of death in young people. What is the role of the faith community in ministering to troubled young people? Share Hope is an interfaith social media contest to promote the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Because we know that just pausing before acting often stops a suicide attempt, 988 is one important tool in fostering a healthy community. Have a look www.988ga.org/faith. This activity could be a great way to start off the school year with your creative youth group. And, your group could win a $250 Pizza Party--there will be ten winners.
