Youth Theological Initiative Candler workshop

Entering the Waters: A Workshop Featuring Religion and Culture Remix

July 12, 10 a.m. -2 p.m. Young people get baptized once.  They live immersed in the waters of popular culture.  To minister to young people, then, you can't just accept or reject popular culture - you have to help teens think with it, through it, and sometimes against it. At Emory University's Candler School of Theology, the Youth Theological Initiative (YTI) has spent 20 years wrestling with these issues. Come see what we’ve learned on Friday, July 12.

The core of the workshop is Religion and Culture Remix, a quick-hitting series of TED talks.  Presenters come from 20 years of YTI staff and friends.  They include professors from Candler and from Yale Divinity School; ordained ministers; and stand-out teachers from the YTI staff.  They'll cover topics including:

  • Popular Culture and caring for African American young men
  • Reality TV
  • Teen fiction (Twilight, The Hunger Games, etc.)
  • Travel and short-term missions
  • Hip hop and theology
  • Communication technology, mindfulness, and environmental justice

The program and the discussions that follow should appeal to pastors, youth workers, theologians, educators, and anyone interested in the intersection of religion and culture.  We also encourage youth ministers to bring interested members of their youth groups.  The cost is $10 per person and includes lunch.

Now is the time to act on the budget

What to do

  1. Call your U.S. Representative and urge them not to accept the Senate version of the budget reconciliation bill without amendments that:
    1. Protect vulnerable populations by restoring or preserving funding for food assistance, healthcare, housing, education, and childcare.
    2. Avoid placing new, unfunded administrative burdens on states and nonprofits.
    3. Retain programs that are essential to local jobs, services, and economic resilience in communities across your district, including Inflation Reduction Act funding.
  2. Reach out to local officials to speak about the economic harm involved, and ask them to speak out against provisions that harm your nonprofit as an employer and contributor to the local economy.
  3. Mobilize your network to do the same. Every voice counts!
