His Holiness Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, founder of the International Association for Human Values and the Art of Living Foundation, will speak at the Martin Luther King, Jr., International Chapel at Morehouse College, part of the 28th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. College of Ministers and Laity “Love and Forgiveness in Action,” involving both the college and the wider Atlanta community. On the eve and anniversary of the assassination of Dr. King, a 1948 graduate of Morehouse College, there is no better time to highlight the need for nonviolent responses and the need for peace in the world. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar will be awarded the Gandi, King, Ikeda Community Builders Prize for his humanitarian work in 152 countries and in recognition for being one of today’s leading voices of peace and non-violence.
On Wednesday, April 3, at 7 p.m., he will deliver his first of two public addresses on the theme, “Non-Violence: No Higher Calling" is a national movement to highlight the power of non-violence.
On Thursday, April 4, at 11a.m., he will deliver his speak on “Love and Forgiveness in Action.” During the Thursday event, 50 of the world’s foremost clergypersons, scholars and organizational leaders will be inducted into the Martin Luther King Jr. Board of Preachers, Board of Sponsors and Collegium of Scholars.
Events on Thursday conclude with an Academic Symposium on The Letter from Birmingham Jail featuring Dr. Larry Spruill, Professor of History at Morehouse College and Dr. David P. Gushee, University Professor of Ethics at Mercer University beginning at 2:30 p.m. in the Bank of America Auditorium in the Shirley E. Massey Executive Conference Center at Morehouse.
A special bonus event, Friday, April 5, 2013 will close the observance with “Education as Ministry: Clergy, School Reform and the Academic Achievement of Black Children” hosted by the Morehouse Research Institute and sponsored by the Walton Family Foundation.
