What is DIAKONIA? DIAKONIA World Federation constitutes an ecumenical network of diaconal groups. It was founded in the Netherlands in 1947 as a symbol of reconciliation after the experience of World War II. Diaconal work establishes a connection between church and society. It overcomes denominational boundaries. It is committed to furthering mutual relationships of respect and solidarity by working together. DIAKONIA sponsors a world assembly every four years. The assembly was in Atlanta at GA Tech July 20 – 27, 2009, the first time in the US since 1972. Guests from 20 countries, representing many denominations, gathered for worship, lectures, Bible study, small group discussion, workshops, singing, and celebration.
